Rebuild Zapier workflows in n8n
There is no Zap import. You rebuild each workflow, reconnect accounts, and decide whether n8n's Sustainable Use License fits how you want to run it.
Time: About an hour for a simple two-step Zap, and much longer for a multi-step one with filters.
Export
Step 1
List the Zaps that actually run
Turn off the experiments. Export or screenshot the Zaps with history in the last month: trigger, filters, and each action.
Step 2
Collect credentials
You will re-authorize every app. Webhook URLs on the Zapier side will change, so note who calls them.
Step 3
Check the license
n8n's Community Edition is free to self-host for your own use under the Sustainable Use License. It is not an OSI license. If you wanted to resell hosting, this is the wrong tool.
Import
Step 1
Install n8n
Docker is the straightforward self-host. Or use n8n Cloud if you do not want a server.
Step 2
Rebuild the trigger first
Create the workflow, add the trigger, and confirm a real event arrives. Then add actions one at a time.
Step 3
Replay a known input
Use an execution you understand from Zapier history and confirm the same record lands in the destination.
What breaks
The app catalog
Obscure SaaS steps are the usual blocker. n8n's list is large and still smaller than Zapier's. A missing app means an HTTP node or staying on Zapier for that one flow.
Task history
Old Zapier runs do not import. You get new executions only.
Paths and formatters
Formatter steps and branching paths need to be redrawn. Budget for that instead of for a converter.
Keep Zapier on until each replacement has run once on live data. Then pause the Zap rather than deleting it, so you can still read what it did.
