Move a site from Google Analytics to Umami
Add the Umami script and start the charts from today. GA4 history does not load by itself. Cloud Pro can take a CSV only if you ask Umami's team.
How long: Under an hour for one site, if you already control the tag.
Take it out
Step 1
Save the GA reports you still cite
In GA4, open Reports, click Share this report, then Download File, then Download CSV. In an exploration, click Export data and choose CSV. A CSV holds up to 100,000 rows. Umami will not show last year on its own.
Step 2
List the events you still watch
Write down the GA4 event names that feed a signup or a purchase. Each one needs a new trigger in Umami.
Step 3
Leave GA in place for a week
Run both tags during the overlap so you can see that Umami is receiving hits before you remove the Google tag.
Put it in
Step 1
Add the site
In Umami, open Websites and click Add website. The name can be anything. The domain is the real domain. Umami uses it to hide your own site from the referrer list.
Step 2
Install the script
Open Edit on that website and copy the code under Tracking code. Put it in the site head. Visit the site. Hits should show up right away. If they do not, check the browser network tab. Ad blockers can hide the script.
Step 3
Recreate one goal
For a page, add a goal for that path, such as /pricing. For a click, put data-umami-event on the button, or call umami.track with the event name. Then add a Triggered event goal with the same name. Goals need Umami 2.12.0 or later.
What you lose
Historical data
There is no GA4 import button. Self-hosted charts start when the script does. Umami Cloud Pro can import a CSV, and the Umami team does that import. Their docs list a self-hosted Umami database or a CSV, not a GA4 property. Ask support@umami.is if you want that. Do not expect last year's explorations to appear.
Ads audiences
Google Ads remarketing audiences do not exist in Umami. If those audiences are why GA is installed, Umami does not replace that job.
Explorations and BigQuery
Path explorations and a BigQuery export are GA features. Umami's event list is the closest hook, and it is not the same dataset.
Judge the new tool on a week of overlap, not on the first hour. Plausible is the top score on the Google Analytics page. Umami is the MIT app beside it.
Sponsored migration guide
$299 once
A guide for one switch: what to take out, how to put it in, and what you lose. The page is labeled sponsored. It does not change which free app ranks #1.
- One pair, written from public pages
- Sponsored label on the guide
- The real top pair keeps its own guide
Opens Stripe to pay.
