Best Free Alternatives to Gmail (2026)

Gmail is a browser inbox with search, labels, and apps on your phone. Consumer Gmail is free and shares a Google Account storage pool. The paid step up is Google Workspace, which adds a custom domain and admin controls. A desktop client or a mail server you run does not also replace Drive, Meet, or Docs.

What Gmail costs

Consumer Gmail is free and shares the Google Account pool of up to 15 GB across Gmail, Drive, and Photos. Workspace Business Starter is $7 USD per user per month on the annual plan, or $8.40 USD on the flexible monthly plan.

Google's help center lists Business Standard at $14 USD per user per month annually ($16.80 flexible) and Business Plus at $22 USD ($26.40 flexible). Business Starter includes 30 GB of pooled storage per user. Those are the standard USD rates on the help page, not a promotional checkout price.

Real cost

mailcow

Free tier
The software is free to run. You pay for the machine, DNS, and a way to send mail that other servers will accept.
Hosted plan
No hosted price recorded.
Self-hosting
Hard. Docker Compose on a Linux host, plus DNS records for the domain. The project documents IMAP, SMTP, SOGo, and Rspamd as part of the stack. Approximate server cost: $10–20/mo for a small VPS, before you solve outbound delivery. Unverified estimate.

Thunderbird

Free tier
The desktop and Android apps are free to download from Thunderbird.
Hosted plan
No hosted price recorded.
Self-hosting
Not a self-hosted product. Thunderbird is a client. The mail still lives on a provider or on a server such as mailcow.

Roundcube

Free tier
The webmail software is free. You still need an IMAP host.
Hosted plan
No hosted price recorded.
Self-hosting
Moderate. PHP, a database, and an existing IMAP server. This is the client install, not a mail exchanger. Approximate server cost: $5–10/mo if it shares a small VPS with the mail server. Unverified estimate.

SnappyMail

Free tier
The app is free to host. Mail storage is a separate IMAP account.
Hosted plan
No hosted price recorded.
Self-hosting
Easy. A PHP app in front of IMAP. Lighter than a groupware suite.

Migrate from Gmail to mailcow

mailcow can pull a mailbox with imapsync. Labels, filters, and the rest of Google do not come with it.
