Best Free Alternatives to Adobe Acrobat (2026)

Acrobat is how a lot of offices edit a PDF, fill a form, merge files, and export to Word. The open-source field does not include a single app that does all of that well. LibreOffice Draw can open and change a PDF, with layout risk. Stirling-PDF and PDFsam Basic are the tools for merge, split, and rotate, and they are not page editors.

What Adobe Acrobat costs

Acrobat Standard and Acrobat Pro are paid subscriptions. A dollar figure that stayed visible in plain text on Adobe's plans page was not captured in this check, so none is stated.

Adobe's plans page describes Standard as basic PDF work and Pro as Standard plus more PDF and e-sign tools. The page also says perpetual Acrobat sales stopped after Acrobat 2020, with Acrobat Pro 2024 sold as a one-time desktop term. Checkout widgets on that page did not leave a stable plain-text price.

Migrate from Adobe Acrobat to LibreOffice

Open the PDF in Draw, change what you must, and export a new PDF. Layout is the thing that breaks.
