Migrate from Trello to Vikunja

Export

   Step 1

   Export the board JSON

   Open the board menu in Trello, choose Print and export, then Export as JSON. Do this for every board you still use.

   Download attachments separately if they matter

   The JSON references files. If a card's attachment is the work product, download it before the Trello account is closed.

   Note the Butler rules

   Automation does not export into something Vikunja can run. Screenshot the rules you would miss.

Import

   Step 1

   Install Vikunja

   A single binary or Docker container is enough. Create the user accounts before you import so assignments have somewhere to land.

   Step 2

   Run the Trello importer

   Vikunja documents a Trello JSON import. Use it. A CSV export is the worse fallback and drops checklists and comments.

   Step 3

   Check one busy board

   Confirm lists, labels, due dates, members, and comments on a board you know. Then import the rest.

What breaks

• Power-Ups and Butler

  Calendar power-ups, voting, and Butler automation do not run inside Vikunja. Recreate the few rules that fire every week.

• Card covers and some attachments

  Covers and files are the usual partial import. Open the cards that are really file folders and re-upload.

• Workspace dashboards

  Trello views that span many boards do not exist on the other side. Vikunja's saved filters are the replacement, and you will set them up yourself.
