Migrate from Todoist to Vikunja

Export a CSV backup from Todoist.

Time: A sitting for a small set of files. Longer if several people share the account.

Parts of this guide depend on a product screen that moves between releases. The fallback path in the steps is the one to trust.

Export

  1. Step 1

    Export while you still have access

    Export a CSV backup from Todoist.

  2. Step 2

    Keep a copy that is not the old account

    Put the export on a disk you control before you cancel. The export is the only rollback.

Import

  1. Step 1

    Bring a sample into Vikunja

    Import the CSV into Vikunja, or recreate projects if the importer drops fields you need.

  2. Step 2

    Then do the rest

    If the sample looks right, run the rest. If it does not, stop and fix the mapping. Do not cancel the old account in the middle.

What breaks

  • What does not come with you

    Reminders, comments, and Karma do not all survive.

  • People and permissions

    Accounts on the new tool are new accounts. Sharing has to be set up again.
