Migrate from Slack to Mattermost

Export

1. 1

   Step 1

   Request a Slack export

In Slack, open workspace settings and request an export. Free workspaces export less than paid ones. Private channels and direct messages are included only when the Slack plan allows it.

2. 2

   Step 2

   Download the zip

Slack emails the admin when the export is ready. Do not edit the zip. Mattermost's importer expects Slack's format.

3. 3

   Step 3

   Write down the integrations

List incoming webhooks, slash commands, and the bots people actually use. None of those move automatically.

Import

1. 1

   Step 1

   Stand up Mattermost first

Install Team Edition and create the team before you import. Use a staging server if this workspace matters.

2. 2

   Step 2

   Run the Slack import

Mattermost documents a Slack import in the system console. Point it at the export zip and let it create users and channels.

3. 3

   Step 3

   Map accounts

Match Slack emails to Mattermost accounts so history attaches to the right people. Tell the team their password is new.

What breaks

• Huddles, canvases, and lists

Those Slack surfaces do not import. Move anything important into a channel post or a real doc before you close Slack.

• Workflows and apps

Slack's workflow builder and third-party apps do not transfer. Recreate the few automations people notice in the first week.

• Message formatting

Most text comes across. Custom emoji, some attachments, and heavily edited messages are the usual gaps. Skim the busiest channels after import.
