Migrate from Microsoft Word to LibreOffice
Export each DOCX from Word, including files that only live in OneDrive.
Time: A sitting for a small set of files. Longer if several people share the account.
Parts of this guide depend on a product screen that moves between releases. The fallback path in the steps is the one to trust.
Export
Step 1
Export while you still have access
Export each DOCX from Word, including files that only live in OneDrive.
Step 2
Keep a copy that is not the old account
Put the export on a disk you control before you cancel. The export is the only rollback.
Import
Step 1
Bring a sample into LibreOffice
LibreOffice Writer opens DOCX directly. Styles and tracked changes are the first things to check.
Step 2
Then do the rest
If the sample looks right, run the rest. If it does not, stop and fix the mapping. Do not cancel the old account in the middle.
What breaks
What does not come with you
SmartArt, some fields, and macros do not survive.
People and permissions
Accounts on the new tool are new accounts. Sharing has to be set up again.
This guide is a path, not a promise that every setting moves. The steps were not re-checked against a live click-path on 2026-10-15.
