Migrate from Jira to OpenProject
Export issues to CSV or use an importer your OpenProject version documents, then rebuild workflows and dashboards. Marketplace apps do not come with you.
Time: A week for a single project with a few thousand issues. Longer when workflows are the product.
Parts of this guide depend on a product screen that moves between releases. The fallback path in the steps is the one to trust.
Export
Step 1
Export issues from Jira
Use Jira's CSV export with comments if you need them. Include issue keys so you can map links later.
Step 2
Save filters and the workflow diagram
JQL filters, automation rules, and workflow post-functions do not export into OpenProject's format. Capture them while you can still open Jira.
Step 3
Check attachments
Confirm the export or a separate attachment download actually contains the files on the issues you care about.
Import
Step 1
Set up work package types
Create the types that match epic, story, bug, and task before you import, or everything lands in one pile.
Step 2
Import and then link
OpenProject and several community tools have offered Jira import paths. Treat them as best-effort and keep the CSV. Re-link parent and child issues after the first load.
Step 3
Rebuild the board
Make a board from the imported statuses. Then fix the five columns people actually move cards across.
What breaks
Automation and apps
Jira automation, ScriptRunner, and marketplace apps do not run. Replace the ones that page a human. Delete the rest.
JQL and dashboards
Saved filters and gadgets are rebuilt with OpenProject's query language. The reports exist. The exact gadgets do not.
Workflow magic
Validators and post-functions become a simpler workflow. This is usually a relief and sometimes a missing control. Decide which before you switch the team.
This guide is unverified against a specific OpenProject importer version. The CSV path is the one that will still be true later.
