Switch from Grammarly to LanguageTool

Install the LanguageTool extension, turn off Grammarly, and self-host the server if the text should not leave your network. Tone rewrites and plagiarism checks do not come along.

Time: Minutes for the browser extension. Half a day if you self-host.

Export

  1. Step 1

Turn Grammarly off in one browser

Disable the extension without uninstalling it, so you can compare a paragraph side by side.

  2. Step 2

    Note the custom style guide

Grammarly style settings do not export. Write down words you had marked as correct or forbidden.

  3. Step 3

Decide where text is allowed to go

The public LanguageTool service receives the text you check. Self-hosting is the private option.

Import

  1. Step 1

    Install the extension

Add LanguageTool in the browser you write in, and the office add-in if you use one. Pick the languages you actually write.

  2. Step 2

    Optional: run the server

The LGPL server is a Java process. Point the extension at your URL. Basic rules work without the large n-gram data. Suggestions get better if you add it.

  3. Step 3

    Add a personal dictionary

Load the words Grammarly had learned: product names, surnames, and the jargon it kept flagging.

What breaks

  • Tone and generative rewrites

LanguageTool underlines errors. It does not rewrite a paragraph in a friendlier tone the way Grammarly Pro does.

  • Plagiarism checks

Not part of LanguageTool. If that was the reason for the subscription, this is the wrong replacement.

  • Mobile keyboards

Grammarly's phone keyboard habit may not have a perfect twin. LanguageTool has mobile apps. Try them before you cancel if you write on a phone.

For a week, keep both extensions installed and only one enabled. The gaps are obvious quickly, and they are mostly tone and rewrites, not spelling.
