Migrate from Google Drive to Nextcloud

Use Google Takeout.

Time: A sitting for a small set of files. Longer if several people share the account.

Parts of this guide depend on a product screen that moves between releases. The fallback path in the steps is the one to trust.

Export

  1. Step 1

    Export while you still have access

    Use Google Takeout. Convert Docs, Sheets, and Slides to Office formats during the export.

  2. Step 2

    Keep a copy that is not the old account

    Put the export on a disk you control before you cancel. The export is the only rollback.

Import

  1. Step 1

    Bring a sample into Nextcloud

    Put the files in Nextcloud and re-share the folders that other people still need.

  2. Step 2

    Then do the rest

    If the sample looks right, run the rest. If it does not, stop and fix the mapping. Do not cancel the old account in the middle.

What breaks

  • What does not come with you

    Comments inside a Google Doc, and Apps Script, do not become Nextcloud comments.

  • People and permissions

    Accounts on the new tool are new accounts. Sharing has to be set up again.

This guide is a path, not a promise that every setting moves. The steps were not re-checked against a live click-path on 2026-10-15.
