Migrate from Figma to Penpot

Move the design files with Penpot's Figma importer if your version still ships it, and export SVG or PDF for anything that has to look identical on day one.

Time: A day for a small library. A sprint if variants and prototypes are load-bearing.

Parts of this guide depend on a product screen that moves between releases. The fallback path in the steps is the one to trust.

Export

  1. Step 1

    Clean the Figma file

Detach unused drafts, name the components you still use, and export a .fig backup from Figma. Also export SVG and PDF of the screens that are about to ship.

  2. Step 2

    List tokens and fonts

Write down color styles, text styles, and the font files. Variable modes do not arrive intact.

  3. Step 3

    Confirm the importer

Penpot has shipped Figma import, and the button has moved between releases. Open Penpot's current import docs before you promise the team a date.

Import

  1. Step 1

Import into a fresh Penpot project

Run the Figma importer against a copy, not the only library. Review components before you invite the whole team.

  2. Step 2

Rebuild auto layout where it matters

Flex and grid in Penpot cover a lot of auto layout and miss edge cases. Fix the components people duplicate daily. Leave the archive screens alone.

  3. Step 3

Recreate the prototype paths you still demo

Interactions come across partially. Rebuild the happy path rather than every overlay.

What breaks

  • Variants and variables

Component properties and variable modes are the first thing to look wrong. Budget time to rebuild the library, not just to open the file.

  • FigJam and Dev Mode

Whiteboards and Dev Mode do not move. Inspect in Penpot is good. Comments and redlines from Figma stay in Figma.

  • Plugins and team permissions

Figma plugins do not run. Recreate who can edit the library. Viewers do not need a full seat on the Penpot plans the way some Figma seats work, so re-check the bill before you copy the old seat list.

This guide is marked unverified because Penpot's importer UI changes. The fallback does not: SVG and PDF exports plus a rebuilt component library.
