Migrate from Discord to Stoat

   Step 1

   Write down the channel list

   Copy the category and channel names that people still use. Roles, if they gate a channel, need a note too. There is no Discord export that rebuilds this.

   Step 2

   Save anything that only exists in a message

   Pins, rules posts, and files worth keeping should be copied out. Message history will not be searchable on the new server.

   Step 3

   Tell people before you move

   A community does not migrate because the admin did. Post the date in the old server. Nitro cosmetics are not part of the move.

Import

   Step 1

   Pick hosted Stoat or your own

   stoat.chat is the hosted service. A server you run uses their self-hosted guide. Most official clients do not point at a private instance. The web client does. Choose before you send the invite.

   Step 2

   Recreate channels and permissions

   Make the categories and the text channels. Voice chats exist in Stoat. Set speak and listen if a channel should not be open to everyone.

   Step 3

   Invite, then leave the old server up

   Share the invite in Discord. Keep Discord readable until the people who matter have joined. Then stop posting in both places.

What breaks

• History, bots, and Nitro

  Old messages, bots, and Nitro perks do not transfer. A bot has to be written against Stoat, not dropped in from Discord.

• Mobile apps on a server you host

  If you self-host, do not promise the official phone apps. Stoat's guide says most of them will not use your instance.

• Screen share

  Screen sharing was not part of the Stoat voice notes checked for this directory. Do not sell the move as a Discord feature match on that point.
