Migrate from 1Password to Bitwarden
Export a 1Password vault and import it into Bitwarden. Recreate shared vaults and plan to re-check passkeys.
Time: An hour for one person. A day for a family or a small team.
Export
Step 1
Export from 1Password
In the 1Password app, export the vault. Prefer the 1PUX format when Bitwarden's importer lists it. CSV is the fallback and is easier to mishandle.
Step 2
Export each shared vault
Personal and shared vaults export separately. A team migration is one export per vault, not one file for the company.
Step 3
Store the export like a secret
The file is an unencrypted copy of the vault if you picked CSV. Put it in an encrypted disk, import, then delete it.
Import
Step 1
Create the Bitwarden account
Use the hosted service or a self-hosted server you have already tested with one login.
Step 2
Import 1PUX or CSV
Bitwarden documents a 1Password importer in the web vault. Import into a fresh vault and spot-check logins, TOTP, and notes.
Step 3
Rebuild sharing
Create an organization or a family and move items into the shared collection. Permissions do not import.
What breaks
Passkeys
Some passkeys import and some sites will ask you to create them again. Sign in with the password once and replace the passkey.
Travel Mode and item history
1Password Travel Mode and per-item history do not exist in the same form. Old versions of a login stay in 1Password unless you copied them out.
Watchtower
Bitwarden's breach report is a Premium feature. The free vault still stores the logins. Do not expect the same dashboard on day one.
Leave 1Password installed, signed out of autofill, until you have logged into the accounts you actually use. Then delete the export file.
